This work takes its inspiration from the "Four Fundamental Truths" of Buddhism. These truths are, in order;
- Life is full of pain and suffering (Dukkha).
- The cause of this pain and suffering is ignorance. (Samudaya)
- The eradication of ignorance means the eradication of pain and suffering. (Nirodha)
- Ignorance can only be destroyed by the “Noble Eightfold Path.” (Magga)
This work, created by combining granite and marble, depicts the space occupied by four fundamental truths. Green granite, with its organic structure, and white marble, with its mottled pattern, are designed to geometrically contrast each other yet maintain balance. This work, a reference to Taoism, a cornerstone of the Zen garden, radiates energy vertically upward. The use of sand allows the artist and the work to be manipulated as desired. Nothingness can give meaning to humanity, and humanity can give meaning to nothingness.
