Taoist influences can be seen in Zen gardens. As in the artist's other works, this work contrasts the static and horizontal energy of the gardens, projecting a vertical and dynamic energy. The artist, questioning the possibility of a three-dimensional version of yin and yang, responded by employing solidity, void, and light. Marble, set in stark contrast, creates balance. A circular void on one marble surface and an amorphous stone shape on the other greet the viewer. The amorphous structure is not cemented, but carved. In other words, the artist attempted to carve stone from stone. Finally, the artist considers light, imbuing the work with depth and meaning. Light from above illuminates the amorphous structure but darkens the ground. Similarly, yet oppositely, it darkens the void and illuminates the ground.
