Erechtheion Caryatid | Iconic Sculpture from Ancient Greece
Erechtheion Caryatid | Iconic Sculpture from Ancient Greece
Share
A caryatid is a sculpted female statue that served as an architectural support. The best-known and most copied examples are the six figures from the Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis of Athens. One of the original six figures, removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century in an act that severely damaged the temple and was widely considered vandalism and looting, is now in the British Museum in London.
Part figurative female sculpture, part architectural element, the caryatid has creatively helped support the weight of buildings for thousands of years. Although particularly popular in their origins in Ancient Greece, they continue to blur the line between art and architecture today.
